REI is Closing on Black Friday and Paying Employees Not to Work

Can a Major Retailer Really Close On Black Friday?

The Holiday season is upon us – along with Holiday sales.  No time of year is more rife with consumerism.  Of particular note is Black Friday, where people cram together and wait for hours and hours to try and get a special sale on a certain thing.  The sales that stores make are immense this time of year.  There are even entire business models and retail chains that make all of their real profit around this time of year, merely breaking around even for the rest of the time.

That being said, is it possible for a major store to NOT take part in Black Friday.  Would they?

Well, REI has announced its intention to do exactly that.  They will be disconnecting from the current system and closing their doors on Black Friday.  They will even be paying their employees to get outside, and not to work!

They’re starting a movement called #OptOutside, and they want us to join them.  How would we “join them?”  On their website, they ask us to explore the outdoors, and tell the world.  They also have a very neat gallery of photos for #OptOutside.

Watch the video below for the announcement, and read on below that for more details!

REI’s website had these things to say:

REI is closing on Black Friday. #optoutside
REI believes that being outside makes our lives better. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.

We want you to join us.

On Black Friday we are closing all our stores and going outside. For 76 years our passion has been to bring you great gear for you to get outside with.

From Our CEO

REI is closing on Black Friday.
You read that correctly. On November 27, we’ll be closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.

Here’s why we’re doing it.
For 76 years, our co-op has been dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a life outdoors. We believe that being outside makes our lives better. And Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of this essential truth.
We’re a different kind of company—and while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently. We’re choosing to opt outside, and want you to come with us
Jerry Stritzke, President, CEO
